What is the best central air conditioner filter?

I have spent most of the day looking at AC filters and cannot decided on what to get. I have a Carrier system that runs on Puron and live in FL where the humidity is high. We currently use a pleated filter (as much as I know) but it is not doing the job. We vacuum a lot and dust a lot but within a day or two the dust is back. I have read about electrostatic filters being good then I read they are a huge fad. So what type of filter should I go with when dealing with a lot of dust and pet dandruff?
need to know what type of filter to buy there are tons of different types, its just not about price.
It has to be a 1 in filter, no way to retrofit anything else. Since the opinions are so split here as well, I guess I will just ask the local service contractor. I hate to do that as they have their own monetary concerns so they will slant you towards the most expensive solution which of course may not be the most optimal.

I have had an electrostatic for about 10 years. It totally rid of musty smell in my basement which was a big problem especially in the crawl areas.

If you look on the Carrier site, you will see that this filter removes mold, mildew , bacteria, and viruses along with the bigger pollen and most things that cause respiratory problems. These cost about $1000

There is also available the newer 3 inch thick filters, Those too remove pretty much the same as the Electrostatic, but not quite. Those cost about $50 each and last 6 months. In order for you to install one, you would need to increase the size of your filter holder to twice in square inches what you currently have. That is a big problem for most people.

On the electrostatic, you still have 2 pleated filters ahead of the unit, that doesn't change Then you have a so called "ground" screen and then the electrostatic "cells". Now those cells you take out once in 6 months and take a water house and clean them.

I should think in Florida, the best would be electrostatic. I am from Chicago and go to Florida every year for a month or more first thing i note is the musty smell in the houses and motels around there. The electrostatic will rid of the musty smell.

If you are going to install yourself, and it is quite easily done, try www.usamfg.net for surplus electrostatics that are 1/2 price or less.
