Reticulated Foams For Filtration
Reticulated foams are mainly used for air and water filtration. Through a special process called reticulation, these foams have the cell windows completely removed to create an open cell foam. Reticulated foam is also suitable as the pre-cursor for post treatment or impregnation to produce fire retardant foam with a high degree of welding ability. Here is a brief overview of the different types of reticulated foams available and their respective qualities Polyether (aquatics / water)here are a wide range of polyether foams available with special grades offered for fine filtration. This grade is less prone to hydrolysis, making it more suitable for use in water related applications.
Polyester (air/gas) Polyester foams have a more controlled cell structure so are more efficient in air filtering to remove and reduce large particles such as pollen. Heat & Moisture Exchange (HME) filters These are special grades used medical applications such as that of anaesthesia lines; moist, exhaled breath is captured by the foam, and then dry, inhaled air is rehydrated by the filter.
Felted foam These are open cell foams which are compressed under heat until the foam sets. When fluids such as ink come into contact, the resultant foam exerts a capillary action, which retains the fluid like a reservoir. They are good shock absorbers and can be used for micro-filtration.
PVC Impregnated This is a polyester reticulated foam with great high frequency welding qualities. One of the most common uses for this foam is in compressor line filtration. Improved Fire Retardant (impregnated) These are reticulated ether foams which are impregnated by a highly fire retardant compound, which improves the performance of the foam when confronting fire.
Cosmetic foam These are special reticulated foams created by a chemical process called Quenching. Quenching improves the softness of the foam by using etching to remove cell windows.
