Tropical Fish Essentials: Fish tanks, Maintenance, Food and More
There are numerous benefits to having your very own tropical fish aquarium. Owning fish has been shown to lower blood pressure, induce relaxation and to enhance living space décor. If you’re ready to make the plunge, there are a few things you should keep in mind regarding the maintenance and proper care of your fish. Follow my tips below.
- Before you purchase your fish, you will need to take a look at some fish tanks. Depending on the amount and size of the fish your want to purchase, the size of the tank will vary. In general, you should have one-gallon of water per one-inch of fish. So if you have five two-inch fish, you will need at least a ten-gallon tank. When placing your tank, make sure that it isn’t near direct sunlight which could affect the water temperature. Then set up your filter and heater. Decorate the tank to your preferences and fill it with room-temperature water. Follow the directions for your specific tank.
- Next go out and select your tropical fish. Do plenty of research beforehand and ask the advice of the pet store sales associates if you aren’t certain. Some fish do not get along well with others, so you’ll want to make sure that you are purchasing an amiable group of fish.
- After you’ve added your fish to your fish tank, make sure that you perform regular maintenance. You will need to replace the water in your tank every couple of weeks. In general, you will only need to remove about twenty-five percent of the water each time and then replace it with fresh water.
- Purchase foods made specifically for your fish types and make to sure avoid over feeding your fish because it will pollute the tank and you will have to clean it more often. In general, your fish should consume all of the food you put in within 3 minutes; otherwise you are over feeding them.
