I have been asked a few times, "what is the best portable air conditioner on the market?" It's not an easy question to answer, because as with most things, what is best comes down to individual circumstances. There are many brands on the market nowadays, and few I just can't recommend. They can cure these ills without shelling out thousands for a new central ac or altering existing systems in any way. They can be installed easily by the homeowner, and are very easy to use. However, there are situations where a portable air conditioner is not the best choice. The first task, then, is to determine whether a portable ac or a different type of ac unit is best for the intended use. I have discussed this first task in other articles, and the focus of this one is after that decision has been made.
Once one has concluded a portable ac is the best type, then one needs to choose the best portable air conditioner for the specific need. First step is to determine the power rating one needs. This alone will whittle the list quite a bit. I usually advise finding the BTU rating recommended for the room size, then moving to the next higher power, especially with single hose units. This is because independent testing of single hose units has revealed that they are often not quite adequate for the rated room size in the real world, where the heat load often makes a room harder to cool. If one needs a heating option, this is often another reason for upsizing, since the heat function may not be quite as powerful as the cooling. Inadequate power for the job equals a purchase mistake. Next is to determine the features needed. One will want auto-drain or evaporative technology so the drain pan virtually never gets full. So power, heat or no heat, and auto-drain or evaporative technology. After that, everything else is optional. Remote controls, ionizers, single vs. dual hose, appearance, and noise level should be considered according to taste. Among those with desired features, check out reliability, efficiency, and cost, and chances are the list will have narrowed to one or just a few. Please don't fall into the trap of more expensive means better! An organized approach like this will save time and make things much easier in the end, as well as ensuring the best chance of satisfaction with the purchase.
In the end, the best portable air conditioner is one that fits the needs of the given situation. It is reliable and keeps your room comfortable year round at the best price without being a hassle to operate. Now let me say a few things on what it's not. It won't be inadequately powered for the intended use. It won't require daily emptying of a drain pan. It won't be devoid of convenience features. It won't be so loud you can't hear yourself think. It won't cost you an arm and a leg. And it won't be unreliable. So figure out the needs, then research reliability, features, and cost, and the best portable air conditioner will be found!
